Book Review – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

HP and the cursed child bookTo be honest I am not sure on my thoughts for this book. I loved being back in the Harry Potter universe and devoured this book in two sittings, the story kept me reading and it felt like being at home when I was reading about Harry again.

That being said I do have some issues.

It being a script, while understandable, made it more difficult for me to read it. I had to go through highlighting all of the characters parts in different colours so I would not need to look at their names to know who was talking thus taking me out of the story. Highlighting it helped me enormously. Most people could probably read it just fine but I have a thing with scripts, I just can’t read them but I did not have as much trouble with this one.

(SPOILER)

One thing that really made me dock a star off my star rating was the out of character Snape. He was saying things that I could not imagine him thinking let alone say. This was one of the times where it was clear to me that J.K. Rowling did not write this book herself. She never would have made Snape such an agreeable character. He gave in too easily to Scorpius at the mere mention of Lily’s name. It just did not sit well with me at all.

It could be argued that Snape was out of character because it was a different world and he was desperate for something to change but even in that case I do not think he would have been so easy to convince.

(END OF SPOILER)

Okay, okay! Enough of my complaints! One thing I absolutely loved about this book was Albus and Scorpius’ friendship. They were adorable and I just want to pinch their cheeks like a creepy old granny. I would gladly read a book about them if JKR actually wrote another HP novel. I want to know more about them and their characters. I want to see more of their adventures together and their witty banter with each other.

I would have liked to have seen more character development for Scorpius and his relationship with Draco but we can’t get everything.

If anything reading this book has just rekindled my love for HP and has reawakened my thirst for new material, new stories. Perhaps now that she has seen the response this new script has been given she might bless us with a new novel?? *Sigh* one can hope.

Summary

Over all I can say that I really enjoyed this script but I think it would be better to see it actually preformed on the stage as it was meant to be seen. I am still hoping to be able to see it but it is REALLY expensive so I’m not holding my breath.

The story was good but it could have used more work and thought before they decided to release it, it seems a little like they just threw it together as soon as the idea came in their heads. It was predictable in places and had some holes in others.

I cannot decide what star rating to give this. I keep going back to my goodreads and changing between a 3 star and a 4 star so I think I shall have to give it a 3.5 instead.

Sorry this is a little disjointed but I seriously don’t know what to think about it, I have a lot of mixed thoughts. There are other things I would like to mention but I don’t want to turn this into a bad review, so I’ll leave it here.

I’m interested to know what your thoughts were. Did you like it? No? Why?

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

We’re now over half way through the year so I thought it would be a good time to reflect back on my reading year so far. I know I haven’t been blogging much but I m still very much reading!

Lets get on with it shall we?

Best Book You’ve Read So Far This Year

Vicious

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I have to admit I haven’t read many novels this year focusing mostly on manga but of the few I have read Vicious is the best one so far. I have so many books on my TBR list so I’m not sure if this will stay as my favourite of the year. We’ll have to wait and see.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2015

City of Lost Souls

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5) by Cassandra Clare

I know a lot of people don’t like this book as much as the others but I loved the ending of this book. it really made me want to read the last book in the series (which I did immediately after and loved it).

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To

Mid Year Freak out 1.png

This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2) by V.E. Schwab

On The Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher

Can you tell I want to read more V.E. Schwab? I think this is turning into an appreciation post for her. This Savage Song sounds amazing and I read A Darker Shade of Magic last year but was disappointed with it but I want to carry on with the series none the less. I brought On The Other Side today so (fingers crossed) I’ll read it really soon. I read the synopsis and it has me really intrigued.

Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half Of The Year

Mid Year Freak out 2.png

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Illustrated Edition by J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay

Haikyuu! Volume 1 by Haruichi Furudate

I have watched both season 1 & 2 of Haikyuu multiple times and love it with a passion so when I heard that they were translating the manga into English I had to pre-order it ASAP!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, John Tiffany

Biggest Disappointment

memoirs of a geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

I love the movie of this and it has been one of my favourites for years, this book has been on my TBR shelf for years. I finally picked it up this year but I found that I found it lacking compared to the film. I think because I love the film so much it has effected the way I view this book. I think I went in with too high expectations and they weren’t met.

Biggest Surprise

Death Note V1

Death Note: Black Edition, Vol. 1 by Tsugumi Ohba, Taskeshi Obata (Illustrator), Tetsuichiro Miyaki (Translator)

I am kind of including this with the anime because they’re basically the same thing. I found the anime on Netflix (of course) after hearing about it for years. If you’re into anime then you will know about Death Note but I never got around to watching it. I did and I won’t look back. This was so good!

Favourite New Author (Debut or New to You)

I can’t really answer this as I have no answer. The new authors I’ve read this year just haven’t struck a cord with me unlike last year when at this point I had three new favourite authors. Hopefully I’ll find someone by the end of the year.

Newest Fictional Crush

rin

Rin Okumura (Blue Exorcist)

Kirito\Kazuto (Sword Art Online)

Simon Lewis (Mortal Instruments)

Newest Favourite Character

death_note2

Light Yagami & L (Death Note)

These two kind of go together for me. They have such a complex relationship\friendship that I love watching them together. I can’t really go into it because of spoilers but lets just say I lost some of my love for it when a certain ‘something’ happened.

Book That Made You Cry

Again I have no answer for this. Doing this tag is really making me see how much I miss out when I read mostly manga.

Book That Made You Happy

I have a whole load of books I could talk about here but I think I’ll go with my favourite.

Shaman King 1

Shaman King Volume 1 by Hiroyuki Takei

I had so much fun re-reading this, it brought back so many memories!

What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of the Year?

read.png

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Zen in the Art of Writing: Essays on Creativity by Ray Bradbury

I’m currently doing a lot of writing but I have only read one book on writing as of this month. I really want to read more about the art of writing and educate myself more.

Who do you tag?

I’m pretty late to this party so I think everyone has already done this in some way. if you haven’t however then I tag you 🙂

Well there we have it, if you stayed to the end of this then I applaud you and thank you. Hope you found this insight into my reading habits interesting and I’ll see you again soon.

TTT – Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don’t Get

TTTRight well here we are again for another TTT. As always you can go over to the Broke and Bookish to see what TTT is and the next topics.

NUMBER 1

The Hunger Games

Katniss EverdeenThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Katniss just seems very dull to me. She acts like she doesn’t care about things. Maybe this is because of the films and my dislike of the third book but I just can’t see myself reading the Hunger Games books again any time soon. (Although talking about them is making me curious. I haven’t read them in a long time.)

NUMBER 2

Harry Potter Series

Severus SnapeHarry Potter by J.K. Rowling

In have a love hate relationship with Snape. Sometimes I dislike him and other times I like him because of how complex a character he is. Snape is regularly jumping on and off this list.

NUMBER 3

Throne_of_Glass_UK

Chaol WestfallThrone of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas

I don’t hate Chaol but up to the point I’m at (just read Crown of Midnight) I’m not liking him as much as everyone else seems to. I don’t know what it is about him but I’m still going to give him a chance.

NUMBER 4

ADSOM UK

Deliah “Lila” BardShades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab

I’ve only read this once and it was a while ago but I remember not liking Lila. She wasn’t fleshed out as a character and I had trouble reading about her when I know so little about her. Hopefully in the second book – A Gathering of Shadows – we get to know more about her.

NUMBER 5

Storm Glass

Opal CowanGlass Series by Maria V. Snyder

Opal is very self-centred and it get old very fast. She is so obsessed with her own problems she forgets that there are other people with their own problems around her. She is too self absorbed for her own good. We do however see her grow as a character as the books progress and I like her in the third – and last – book in the series, Spy Glass.

For now these are all of the characters I can remember that I don’t like. I thought about putting Cath from Fangirl in but it isn’t the character I have an issue with, I think it is the book in general so I decided not to include her. (If you’re curious here is my mini review)

Do you agree with me on any of these? I’d like to know 🙂

As always feel free to leave a link to your TTT in the comments.

Until next time,

February Book Haul

SAM_1931 (2)

There were a few books that I brought this month that I had no real intention of getting any time soon however because I went shopping and splurged a little with left over Christmas money I ended up getting them. One book on here was a pre-order that came in the post.

Blue Exorcist, Volume 5

By Kazue Kato, Translated by John Werry

So getting the manga out of the way first before getting on to the bigger books. I wanted to read this series because I knew that the anime finished in a completely different way from the manga so I needed to know what the difference was. I picked up the first four books and they’re basically the same but then I got to the fifth book and it is going in a completely different direction and so far I am loving it. The next three are currently on their way to me so I’m not going to include them in this haul but I’ll let you know my thoughts on them at some point.

Feb Book Haul 1.png

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Night Study by Maria V. Snyder

Night Study was the book that I pre-ordered some months ago when it first became available to buy. I can’t wait to dive into this book and see how the story progresses. As for the other two books, I am going in to them mostly blind but An Ember in the Ashes has been on my wishlist for a while so when I went book shopping I decided to pick it up in a ‘buy one get one half price’ offer at Waterstones.

Feb Haul 2.png

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

I finished reading Clockwork Angel earlier this month and was planning to dive right into Clockwork Prince but as I was reading it I could feel a reading slump coming and had to put it down and move on to something else.

I brought these two Harry Potter books to complete my collection with those covers. I think they look stunning and I’m so happy that that collection is now complete.

Well those are all the books I brought in February this year. Are there any on here that you think I should read ASAP? Let me know your thoughts 🙂

Until next time,

Thoughts: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Script Book

Okay so we all know that I am a huge Harry Potter fan (who isn’t?) but I’m not too sure about this new script book that J.K Rowling is releasing following the opening of the play in London.

I love the fact that we can know the story of the play even if we can’t see it, regardless of what country we live in. I think it is great that we can read it even though it isn’t an actual novel but I would have preferred it if it had been in novel form.

I have read plays before while I was in university and even before that when I was in high school but I’ve never really been able to enjoy myself while reading them. I find it incredibly hard to immerse myself in the story when there are stage directions and such interfering. That is probably one of the reasons I’ve never been able to finish reading a Shakespeare play before. It takes me a long time to understand what is happening and what I should be visualising in my head.

I will most likely end up buying the script book anyway but I’m going to try and get tickets to see it in person (I doubt it’ll actually happen though, I think they sold out a long, long time ago).

All of that said I am internally and externally fangirling so hard over the fact that we are getting so much Harry Potter related content this year. We’ve got the play\script, Fantastic Beasts, the new Pottermore, Harry Potter colouring books and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Illustrated Edition not forgetting the new Funko Pop figurines (Sirius Black you will be in my hands soon!)

What are your opinions on the script book? Are you happy? Would you have preferred it as a new novel instead of a script? What are you most looking forward to? I think I’m most excited for the film truth be told. It looks amazing!

Until next time,

January Wrap-Up and Haul

SAM_1903

So last month I wasn’t posting on here very much and for that I’m sorry. I lost the urge to write anything so I didn’t. I’m back here though and trying to get back into the groove of things.

All of that said I have had a good month reading wise, managing to read seven books. Most of these are manga and comics but I did read two full books this month and I am well into my third.

Wrap-Up

Jan Wrap Up.png

I only read from the fifth book this month because I have been slowly working my way through the series. If you go back and look at some of my other wrap-ups then you’ll see a few of these there too. I am waiting for the last book in the series to come in the post at the moment so I will soon finish re-reading the series. I have only read the online fan translation of this manga before this so it is nice to read an official translation.

SAM_1917 (2)

At the start of last year I read the first two books in the Mortal Instruments series but I didn’t continue reading until December. I wanted to read all of the books before the TV series started but obviously that didn’t happen. I was a little annoyed with myself about that so I decided that I would read them all now. I’m so glad I decided to read them. I had only ever read up to City of Fallen Angels and I loved City of Lost Souls! I’m hoping that the last book will be just as good.

The search

Last year I read the first collection in this comic series (The Promise Parts 1, 2 & 3) and really liked them so when I had some Christmas money I decided to splurge on this beauty.

Book Haul

I went a little mad on the book buying this month and if I’m honest I can’t see that stopping next month. There are quite a few books I want to get to complete reading a series (Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices). I’m being good though and not buying them until I’ve actually read up to the books I’ve already got.

SAM_1896 (2)

Jan Haul.png

At work we have a charity bookcase where you put your unwanted books so that other people can come along and buy them for 50p that goes to charity. Well one day last week I was sitting at the checkout and I looked over and saw that someone had left a copy of The Host in hard cover. Now I love reading The Host and I have read it multiple times, so many times in fact that the book is darn near falling apart (I’ve got a paperback). I’ve been after a hard cover version of it for so long! So when I saw it on the shelf I immediately jumped off my counter and grabbed it for myself. I was chuffed 😉

Jan Haul p2

I had no idea that City of Heavenly Fire was so huge! I was going to wait for a while before reading this but once I saw it I knew that if I don’t read it now then the size of it will scare me off and I’ll never read it. Needless to say that is what I’m currently reading.

This is the last book in the Rurouni Kenshin manga series and I am eagerly anticipating it in the post sometime this week. Re-reading these books has reminded me why I loved it in the first place. It has been so long since I read the end of the series there are a few things that I have forgotten about and it is nice to go back and rediscover them years later.

Well there it is, all of the books I have read and brought in the month of January. I look forward to reading your posts on your reading this month. Hopefully I’ll be able to finish reading City of Heavenly Fire during February and move on to The Infernal Devices but we’ll see.

Until next time,

Tori x
