Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

We’re now over half way through the year so I thought it would be a good time to reflect back on my reading year so far. I know I haven’t been blogging much but I m still very much reading!

Lets get on with it shall we?

Best Book You’ve Read So Far This Year

Vicious

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I have to admit I haven’t read many novels this year focusing mostly on manga but of the few I have read Vicious is the best one so far. I have so many books on my TBR list so I’m not sure if this will stay as my favourite of the year. We’ll have to wait and see.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2015

City of Lost Souls

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5) by Cassandra Clare

I know a lot of people don’t like this book as much as the others but I loved the ending of this book. it really made me want to read the last book in the series (which I did immediately after and loved it).

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To

Mid Year Freak out 1.png

This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2) by V.E. Schwab

On The Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher

Can you tell I want to read more V.E. Schwab? I think this is turning into an appreciation post for her. This Savage Song sounds amazing and I read A Darker Shade of Magic last year but was disappointed with it but I want to carry on with the series none the less. I brought On The Other Side today so (fingers crossed) I’ll read it really soon. I read the synopsis and it has me really intrigued.

Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half Of The Year

Mid Year Freak out 2.png

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Illustrated Edition by J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay

Haikyuu! Volume 1 by Haruichi Furudate

I have watched both season 1 & 2 of Haikyuu multiple times and love it with a passion so when I heard that they were translating the manga into English I had to pre-order it ASAP!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, John Tiffany

Biggest Disappointment

memoirs of a geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

I love the movie of this and it has been one of my favourites for years, this book has been on my TBR shelf for years. I finally picked it up this year but I found that I found it lacking compared to the film. I think because I love the film so much it has effected the way I view this book. I think I went in with too high expectations and they weren’t met.

Biggest Surprise

Death Note V1

Death Note: Black Edition, Vol. 1 by Tsugumi Ohba, Taskeshi Obata (Illustrator), Tetsuichiro Miyaki (Translator)

I am kind of including this with the anime because they’re basically the same thing. I found the anime on Netflix (of course) after hearing about it for years. If you’re into anime then you will know about Death Note but I never got around to watching it. I did and I won’t look back. This was so good!

Favourite New Author (Debut or New to You)

I can’t really answer this as I have no answer. The new authors I’ve read this year just haven’t struck a cord with me unlike last year when at this point I had three new favourite authors. Hopefully I’ll find someone by the end of the year.

Newest Fictional Crush

rin

Rin Okumura (Blue Exorcist)

Kirito\Kazuto (Sword Art Online)

Simon Lewis (Mortal Instruments)

Newest Favourite Character

death_note2

Light Yagami & L (Death Note)

These two kind of go together for me. They have such a complex relationship\friendship that I love watching them together. I can’t really go into it because of spoilers but lets just say I lost some of my love for it when a certain ‘something’ happened.

Book That Made You Cry

Again I have no answer for this. Doing this tag is really making me see how much I miss out when I read mostly manga.

Book That Made You Happy

I have a whole load of books I could talk about here but I think I’ll go with my favourite.

Shaman King 1

Shaman King Volume 1 by Hiroyuki Takei

I had so much fun re-reading this, it brought back so many memories!

Favourite Book to Film Adaptation You Saw This Year

the-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-2-poster-jennifer-lawrence

The Hunger Games: MockingJay Part 2

Favourite Review You’ve Written This Year

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought So Far This Year (Or Received)

pretty.png

This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of the Year?

read.png

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Zen in the Art of Writing: Essays on Creativity by Ray Bradbury

I’m currently doing a lot of writing but I have only read one book on writing as of this month. I really want to read more about the art of writing and educate myself more.

Who do you tag?

I’m pretty late to this party so I think everyone has already done this in some way. if you haven’t however then I tag you 🙂

Well there we have it, if you stayed to the end of this then I applaud you and thank you. Hope you found this insight into my reading habits interesting and I’ll see you again soon.

Until Next Time,

January Wrap-Up and Haul

SAM_1903

So last month I wasn’t posting on here very much and for that I’m sorry. I lost the urge to write anything so I didn’t. I’m back here though and trying to get back into the groove of things.

All of that said I have had a good month reading wise, managing to read seven books. Most of these are manga and comics but I did read two full books this month and I am well into my third.

Wrap-Up

Jan Wrap Up.png

I only read from the fifth book this month because I have been slowly working my way through the series. If you go back and look at some of my other wrap-ups then you’ll see a few of these there too. I am waiting for the last book in the series to come in the post at the moment so I will soon finish re-reading the series. I have only read the online fan translation of this manga before this so it is nice to read an official translation.

SAM_1917 (2)

At the start of last year I read the first two books in the Mortal Instruments series but I didn’t continue reading until December. I wanted to read all of the books before the TV series started but obviously that didn’t happen. I was a little annoyed with myself about that so I decided that I would read them all now. I’m so glad I decided to read them. I had only ever read up to City of Fallen Angels and I loved City of Lost Souls! I’m hoping that the last book will be just as good.

The search

Last year I read the first collection in this comic series (The Promise Parts 1, 2 & 3) and really liked them so when I had some Christmas money I decided to splurge on this beauty.

Book Haul

I went a little mad on the book buying this month and if I’m honest I can’t see that stopping next month. There are quite a few books I want to get to complete reading a series (Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices). I’m being good though and not buying them until I’ve actually read up to the books I’ve already got.

SAM_1896 (2)

Jan Haul.png

At work we have a charity bookcase where you put your unwanted books so that other people can come along and buy them for 50p that goes to charity. Well one day last week I was sitting at the checkout and I looked over and saw that someone had left a copy of The Host in hard cover. Now I love reading The Host and I have read it multiple times, so many times in fact that the book is darn near falling apart (I’ve got a paperback). I’ve been after a hard cover version of it for so long! So when I saw it on the shelf I immediately jumped off my counter and grabbed it for myself. I was chuffed 😉

Jan Haul p2

I had no idea that City of Heavenly Fire was so huge! I was going to wait for a while before reading this but once I saw it I knew that if I don’t read it now then the size of it will scare me off and I’ll never read it. Needless to say that is what I’m currently reading.

This is the last book in the Rurouni Kenshin manga series and I am eagerly anticipating it in the post sometime this week. Re-reading these books has reminded me why I loved it in the first place. It has been so long since I read the end of the series there are a few things that I have forgotten about and it is nice to go back and rediscover them years later.

Well there it is, all of the books I have read and brought in the month of January. I look forward to reading your posts on your reading this month. Hopefully I’ll be able to finish reading City of Heavenly Fire during February and move on to The Infernal Devices but we’ll see.

Until next time,

Tori x

Top Ten Tuesday #18 – Best Books I’ve Read in 2015

TTT

This week we’re all talking about the Top Ten Books we’ve Read in 2015 and as soon as I saw this topic I knew I had to get my hands on it and give it a shot. So here we are, it’s the end of 2015 and this is the list of my favourite reads of this year.

Top Ten Tuesday is created and hosted over at TheBrokeandBookish, head on over there if you’re interested in finding out more about this weekly bookish meme.

NUMBER 10Food Wars Manga

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Vol. 1 by Yuuto Tsukuda, Shun Saeki and Yuki Morisaki

This is mainly on the list because I loved the anime and I think that translated back to the manga when I read it. I don’t know if I’ll continue collecting but I will watch it again if they make another season.

NUMBER 9

Life and death

Twilight: Life and Death by Stephenie Meyer

I freaked out when I heard about this and I actually really enjoyed it. I mainly brought it because I was curious about the premise but after reading it I actually really liked it and I might even like it better than the original!

NUMBER 8

12413836

Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Promise Part 1 by Gene Luen Yang, Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino and Gurihiru

I thought that this was a really good opening comic to a series and I can’t wait to carry on collecting the series. If you like Avatar then you will probably really like this too. It carries on after the end of the final season and gives us a look into the events that happen after the final ‘battle’ and the long reaching consequences and problems that occur.

NUMBER 7

Nimona

 Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (Reviewed)

I really enjoyed this book. At first I wasn’t sold on it but then the story fleshed out and by the end of the book I was really invested in the characters and I really wanted to know what happened. This is a good book to introduce someone into the genre of Graphic Novels.

NUMBER 6

Shadow Study

Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder

I was a little disappointed in this book truth be told. I didn’t really like the change in writing style that was introduced but I was so happy that she decided to continue with the series. I honestly thought that she had finished with it but turns out that there is going to be another two books. It was really nice to be able to read a new story about some of my favourite characters.

This was made even better by the fact that I got to meet the author Maria V. Snyder at a book signing and I even had the chance to interview her via email for a blog post!

NUMBER 5

ADSOM UK

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab (Reviewed)

I’m glad I read this this year. I want to try reading more of Victoria Schwab’s works and look forward to reading more in the new year. I was expecting to be blown away by this book but it fell a little flat for me unfortunately but I still enjoyed it enough for it to make this list.

NUMBER 4

Dr and Hyde

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

This was one of the only classics I read this year but I’m glad I read it. I don’t know what I was expecting when I went into this but I really liked it and I hope to go back and read it again eventually.

NUMBER 3

The Cuckoo’s Calling

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (Reviewed)

You’re probably wondering why this isn’t one of my top two. Well it’s because it took me a long time to read this and I was a little out of my comfort zone. This was the first detective novel I have read and it took some getting used to. I still marvel over the writing and the amount of detail J.K.R goes into. The characters were all so real and I could easily imagine them in my head right down to how they sounded. It was like I was transported into a TV show in my head.

I loved it and I plan to read the second book, The Silkworm as soon as I can. I plan to buy it in the January sales so I can grab Career of Evil around the same time.

NUMBER 2

Simon Vs

Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (Reviewed)

I’m surprised too. When I read this I never expected it to be one of my favourite reads of the year but I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a quick read and deliciously sweet. I fell in love with this book because of the characters and the format. If you haven’t read this book yet then you seriously need to get a move on and pick it up!

NUMBER 1

The Martian Covers.png

The Martian by Andy Weir (Reviewed)

Yeah. I love this book. I will re-read this in the future. I loved this book so much I got my Mum to read it and she too loved it. I was surprised when I read this, I had been gifted this last Christmas and it took me months to pick it up. I have to admit the cover put me off.

This book had me on the edge of my seat so many times I lost count. I even started to annotate notes in the margins as I read because I found myself reacting to his sarcasm and responding with my own. I seriously loved this book and it deserves to have the top spot. I was a little late to this but I don’t care, I got there eventually and fell in love. This is a new favourite book and yes, this was the best book I read this year.

Well those are all of my top ten books of this year, are any of these on your list? Send me a link to your TTT I’d love to see your Top Books of 2015. I can’t wait to see what my list will be like next year!

Until next time,

Top Ten Tuesday #13 – If You Like Nimona You’ll Like …

TTT

This week over at the Broke and Bookish they’ve given us the topic of recommending books based on a book or author. For example if you like Throne of Glass I think you’ll like Poison Study. Or if you like Sarah J. Maas I think you’ll like Kristin Cashore. I think you get the idea.

I’m going to preface this by saying that I really struggled with this. I don’t usually read these types of posts or watch these videos. I’m not sure why I don’t like them but I am going to do this post anyway. It is always good to go out of your comfort zone.

This list is going to be my recommendations on if you have read and liked Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. I read it recently and reviewed it.

If You Liked Nimona Then You’ll Like –

TTT #13

  • Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Illustrated by Roc Upchurch

  • Saga by Brian K. Vaughan (Writer) and Illustrated by Fiona Staples

  • Fairy Tail by Hiro Mashima and translated by William Flanagan

  • Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis and Brooke A. Allen

I’ve never actually read it but I have put this in here because it is written\illustrated by the same person who wrote Nimona so it stands to reason that you’d probably like this too.

TTT #13 2

CARTOONS

Gravity Falls by Alex Hirsch

138756Okay, so those are all of the recommendations I can think of if you liked reading Nimona. Quite a few of these book series I haven’t actually finished yet so I’m still withholding judgement on them but I liked them enough that I can recommend them to you.

I hope you liked my list this week, remember I would love to read your TTT so please leave a link in the comments.

Until next time,

September 2015 Wrap-Up and Mini Book Haul

It always surprises me just how much reading, writing and watching I can do in the span of four weeks. This here is a list of what I read this month, wrote this month and watched this month. I am also going to throw my book haul in here and some statistics for you too!

STATS (at time of writing this)

I think I did pretty well this month 🙂 I didn’t read all of the books I wanted to but I kind of knew I wasn’t going to be able to. I did finally read The Cuckoo’s Calling and started reading Throne of Glass. I read a new book this month (Nimona) I don’t think it has even touched my TBR shelf!

You can find my September TBR here, if you’re interested and I will be shortly posting my October TBR for you too. I managed to restrain myself on my book buying this month, I see that changing next month though as I have already pre-ordered two books for next month and there is a 3DS game I am planning on buying … my bank account is going to be running on fumes!

I hope you all had a great reading month too, if you have a wrap-up then please leave a link in the comments 🙂 Have you read any of the books on this list? If so what did you think?

Top Ten Tuesday #12 – My Fall TBR

TTT

Now this is going to require me to think up a TBR for Fall. I never normally have a list of books I want to read and stick to it. I have a general idea of what books I will read but it’s always changing. Some of these books I have already read this month so I will mark them showing which I’ve read.

Well this list is a lot longer than ten books, I kind of turned this in to a post about my TBR instead of my Top Ten but I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted and created by The Broke and Bookish, if you’re interested in joining in the meme or want to know what are next topic is then head on over there.

As always if you click on the book title or book cover it will take you to its Goodreads page.
